The Mathnavi of Imam Jalaluddin al-Rumi

Category : Spiritualism

In a world of temporal wonders and impoverished spirits the physical demands loom over man with a ferocity he is neither equipped to fend off nor tough enough to avoid. From time immemorial mankind has sought guidance as a means of emancipation and illumination. Those whose souls have been illuminated are masters in the art of keeping the soul open to the influx of the Infinite and thus their words revive deadened hearts today with the same efficacy as when they were originally uttered. Such is the influence of the Mathnawi of Imam Rumi (ra). In this moving lecture, Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr. Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri, comments upon selected sections of the exquisite opus of Imam Jalaluddin al-Rumi (ra). The Shaykh states that the ego (Nafs) stands opposed to the Spirit (Ruh), which is the Deputy of Allah (swt) and that the two are in constant conflict. The ego’s desires are multifarious and draw man away from God, towards the lower, bestial tendencies of man. The Spirit, on the other hand, yearns for friendship; friendship that will replicate the environment of the Highest Assembly (Mala ul ‘Ala); friendship that can bear the secrets of the majestic court of the Divine (swt). The Shaykh delves deep into the science of Sufism, exploring and unveiling numerous subtleties in the process. The Shaykh’s remarkable insights and extensive commentary pierce the listener’s heart and inspire within one the longing for spiritual refinement.
